The following is an excerpt from Gail Shapiro's book: True Conflict Resolution at Home, School and Work:

"How to resolve conflicts yourself first S - T - O - P what you are doing and think about what each letter in the word STOP stands for."

S-T-O-P incorporates the tools of conflict resolution by encouraging one to think first before reacting to a conflict situation. Each letter stands for a way to resolve the conflict:

S - listen to what the person is SAYING.
T - take TIME to cool off, calm down and think.
O - list the peaceful OPTIONS for resolving this problem.
P - focus on the PROBLEM not the PERSON.
